Hello again,

Here's a short video I've been working on.
It is a segment from the show, "Sekai No Hate Made ItteQ", a "mystery solving and adventure tv show". Whatever that is. Well that's what the show calls itself, anyway.

This particular segment is a popular series featuring the comedian Miyagawa Daisuke traveling around the world to participate festivals of different countries. These have ranged from well known festivals like the Running of the Bulls festival in Spain, to virtually unknown festivals where you catch muddy eels in South East Asia.

Anyway, it's fun to see what different cultures do in their spare time, and may be interesting for you to see Japanese entertainers hanging around outside Japan.

Wow.
I've actually done a post!

It has been half a year, basically, since the last one.
I'm sorry to those who have depended on this site as a source for Japanese shows, especially since it seems like less people sub now than they used to as well! However this blog just remains a sort of hobby, and is something that my life isn't based around. Especially nowadays, as you would have noticed.

To be honest, I haven't watched a full episode of Japanese TV for about a year now (I think). At least, I don't watch it regularly like I used to in the past, and I've lost interest in it too.

Even so, I am still interested in bringing you guys some nice treats, sometimes. So be patient and you might get one from time to time.

This one is from a show which has since been cancelled from TV (I think). I thought they had some relatively interested episodes though. Particularly episodes featuring international people expressing their opinions about Japanese people, society and culture.

.........and so that's what I've subbed.
I thought you people would find it interesting too, since I assume that a lot of you would be like the guests on this show.

TRANSLATION NOTES

Burmese Harp
Burmese harp is a famous Japanese book and film set in Burma at the end of WW2. It is a standard novel that school kids in Japan read. I highly recommend people to read or watch the film.

Ghana may be world famous as a huge exporter of cocoa beans, but the perception that chocolate and Ghana are connected is much stronger in Japan due to a popular chocolate brand name called "Lotte Ghana Chocolate".

Made a bit of a mistake in the translation.
The Englishised name of this character is actually "Lum".
But ahh well. Fuck it.

This is a scantily clad alien character from the anime series Urusei Yatsura.

Won't be a particularly nice sight if an old dude was wearing this costume.

Hitoshi Matsumoto's Suberanai Hanashi 7 [English Subtitles]

Hi there.

So the long wait is over, and here it is, the next installment to Hitoshi Matsumoto's Suberanai Hanashi.

Going by logical order, I should be releasing episode 6, but I decided to skip that one, as it just got comedians to retell particularly popular stories that they had told in past episodes. So basically I thought, "F** that shiz" and just did 7. Hopefully you have no problems.

As you probably noticed, I've been very very inactive on this blog recently. Unfortunately you will have to expect much of the same from now on, for about a year. I have priorities outside of subbing that require more attention now and therefore can't spend so much time doing this.

Please understand.

Videso Subbing: Gaki no Tsukai (2012.03.25): Tanaka's Breakdown 1

G'day people,

Time for another Gaki video from us at J-Burogu.
In this episode, the Gaki staff investigate allegations that Tanaka has become highly disturbed after the comments made by Matsumoto in "100 Things About Matsumoto" segment. Tanaka is followed by Gaki cameras for about a week to determine why and how Tanaka has changed so suddenly and drastically.


This was a nice surprise of an episode from recent Gaki episodes (oh crap, it's from like 1-2 years ago now haha), it features Tanaka's as he convincingly portrays a character highly unlike him.

Video Subbing: MOYA MOYA SUMMERS (2012.04.29) at Mt. Takao

Merry Christmas people!

Long time no blog post.
I've finally finished a video, it's getting longer and longer for me to finish one unfortunately.
Strange since I actually started this one fairly early compared to what I have been in the past few vids.

I'd like to be more active with this blog but it requires quite a lot of time and effort, and I find it hard to be bothered these days. Unfortunately for you guys.


So here's a Moya Moya Summers episode that I just finished working on.
This time, they visit Takaosan, aka Mt. Takao, a mountain near Tokyo that is very popular destination for tourists and casual mountain hikers. It's more of the laid back wandering around that you may be accustomed to seeing from this show, with Summers making fun of things that they see or hear along the way, in their chilled style of comedy.

Gaki no Tsukai (2006.02.26) Hamada "Unthinkable!" Trial Punishment

Hola amigos!

Yup the final part of the infamous Hamada "Unthinkable!" Trial has now been subbed, at last.
Hamada is going to be punished for his sadistic behaviour with the "Retching with the Kaeru no Uta" punishment.

Doesn't make sense? Yeah I know.

Kaeru no Uta is a popular children's song often sung in kindergarten and primary school, and translates to "The Song of the Frogs". Anyway, it's easier for you to just watch rather than me bothering to explain so here it is:

Video Subbing: Mecha Mecha Iketeru! (1997.10.04) Okamura Offer Series #1: Johnny's Jr [COMPLETE]

Hey
I have completed the Mecha Mecha Iketeru! Okamura Offer Series #1: Johnny's Jr episode.

Sorry about the long wait.

It seems like a bit of subbing fatigue is setting in, and I'm finding it hard to doing it for long periods.
Or maybe it's just fatigue from life stresses.....sigh. (I need a friggin' job!)

Anyway, it's done now, and time to move onto the next video, I suppose.

So, just a short description of the video now, even though I wrote one for the previous post with the first half of the video.

"This episode of Mecha Mecha Iketeru features the hosts, 99 (Okamura Takashi and Yabe Hiroyuki), interacting with  Johnny's Juniors. The Johnny's Juniors are young aspiring idols that are trained by the Johnny and Associates talent agency, until they are deemed fit to debut. These kids are usually between 7~16 years of age, and have their own cult following-ish gatherings too.

Okamura, despite being in his late 20's, attempts to join the Johnny's Jrs, and then appear in a SMAP concert as a backup dancer. By the way, SMAP is/or were, the undisputed idol kings (mainly thanks to Kimura Takuya, aka Kimutaku) during the 1990's and 2000's, until they grew a bit old and gradually replaced by Arashi as the top dogs."

Sorry to Bother You.....Nashimoto Masaru

Okamura impersonates a guy called Nashimoto Masaru, who was a famous show business reporter who's catchphrase was "Kyoushu desu" ("Sorry to bother you.."), when approaching celebrities for an interview.


KONDO MASAHIKO
Was one of the early idol stars from the Johnny's agency. Initially gaining popularity as a member of the Tanokin Trio in the early 80's, before forging a successful career as a solo idol. His most famous work is generally agreed to be "Gin Gira Gin Ni Sarigenaku", the dance for which Okamura impersonated.

Cue corny 80's music and dancing, and everything else.






TAKIZAWA AND TSUBASA
These modern idol stars make an appearance in this Mecha-Ike special as Johnny's Jrs.
I didn't recognise them the first time I watched this video (because I didn't even know about them), but at some point I recognised them, and got a mild shock of surprise. It's interesting to see that these little kids developed into full grown stars (even if i don't really appreciate their work), and equally interesting but sad to see all the other kids who amounted to nothing in the showbiz. Oh, by the way, Kanjani Jr also make an appearance, and many members from this group are now famously part of Kanjai ∞ ( Pronounced: Kanjani Eight).


Nowadays, Takizawa (aka Tackey) and Tsubasa have formed a singing unit, of mostly pop tunes accompanied with hand dancing (in other words waving arms around).

Videos of them actually doing something are quite rare on youtube. Probs because of Johnny's tight clamp on their copyrighted material. Nevertheless, here's a horrible live show of theirs. For their sake, I hope it looks horrible because it's filmed by someone in the audience.....On second thought, the guys who dissappeared from showbiz may have got the better deal.





ANTONIO INOKI
I've written about him several times before. Basically, most famous pro wrestler in Japan.
Most well known for
-His wrestling skills
- Massive chin
-Smacking people in the face to inject "kiai",
- Yelling "Genki desuka!" (Are you feeling good!) and "1, 2, 3...DAAAAHH!!"
-Cobra twists.

 TRIP AROUND JAPAN WITH NAKAI
 This was alluded to a couple of times in this episode. At the end of almost every year, the duo from 99 and Nakai Masahiro of SMAP go on a trip around Japan and showcase various foods you can eat in the different parts of Japan. 


SAKATA WALK
The Sakata walk is a comical walk invented by veteran comedian Sakata Toshio. He was quite popular during the 70's, and remains a senior figure mainly in the Kansai region, where he regularly features in the Yoshimoto Shinkigeki (comedy stage show). He recently appeared a Gaki no Tsukai episode where Yamasaki pretended to freak out about something and Sakata ended up thinking he was possessed by a ghost or something and began rubbing his back. (Oh, it's episode 2013.03.10).





SHIMURA KEN

Okamura also does a few impersonations of Shimura Ken's jokes. One was with the Henna Ojisan, (Strange Old Man) character, and the other the Bakatono (Idiot Emperor). Shimura Ken was a huge comedy star who started off as a member of the Drifters (a sort of Monty Python of Japan). He has been a very influential figure for many comedians, and is famous for many gags, one of which is "Ai-n!" with the Bakatono character. Not really sure what it's meant to mean.

Below, is a video example of Henna Ojisan, who is also popularly associated with a trademark dance. The 2nd video is the crazy utter mindfucking (for unsuspecting Westerners) music video of the Ai-n Dance, along with Morning Musume by-product, Mini-Moni.





MITSUURA YASUKO
Mitsuura is a member of the regular cast of Mecha-Ike. Although 99 are the stars of the show, they do have a group of support members, which also includes Mitsuura and her partner Okubo (as the duo Oasis), Arino and Hamaguchi of Yoiko, etc. She sells her bespectacled, ugly, and "forever alone" image to full effect, and has been a successful female comedian in a generally male dominated industry.

Konichiwa again peoples,

I've done a short video about 7 minutes that was requested to me about....1 or 2 years ago (probably), like most of the videos in the old request list.

Sorry about generally ignoring these despite having promised to do them. The problem is that most of these videos would probably only interest the requester and maybe some other small following, and since the fanbase of this website has grown since the olden times, there's a need to please more people.

So anyway, that's my excuse ;p

This video is from Shoujiki Shindoi, a show hosted by Domoto Tsuyoshi from Kinki Kids. I've done two full episodes in the past but this is just a short outtake from a Christmas special with Kimura Kaela. This particular special also featured Gackt and the band, Ulfuls. You can watch the Gackt bit somewhere else, and it's subbed too (yay). 


Well, as I mentioned already, this video will probably only interest a few people that follow this blog. It's not particularly funny or interesting, they don't really do much. If you still want to watch then you're free to, but don't complain that you didn't like what you saw and I should be doing more Shabekuri or something........please.

At least it'll please the Kinki Kids fans though. And there's a shit load of them too.

Hey people,

Here's another Shabekuri 007 video.
This time it's featuring Aoki Ryuji, a famous monomane artist, aka a professional impersonator.
He shocked many people a few years back at his ability to perform as Misora Hibari, who is one of the most famous and iconic singers in Japanese music. Well, pre-80's / 90's music anyway.

What's more impressive, or uncanny, is that Misora Hibari is a woman, whereas Aoki is a man. Due to his high pitched voice he is able to mimic many female singers very well.

Anyway, they tell all most of this stuff in the video anyway, so I'll stop.

He is one of Japans most famous comedians (at least to older audiences) and was a member of the Drifters, a comedy unit that was something like the Monty Python of Japan. Video Subbing: Prize Winning Life, Nasubi Part 2

Hey peeps,

Here is 15 minutes more of Nasubi's prize winning lifestyle from the show "Susunu! Denpa Shounen".

A big thanks goes to PigInTheMud for uploading the raw videos of the series.

It's a pretty much straight forward episode, so there was nothing I need to mention regarding translation notes, which was lucky.

I hope the subs aren't too hard to read. I sort of stayed faithful to the Japanese text  and so it might seem to fly around the screen and be difficult to follow. Sorry if it is, but I was just experimenting.....I might not do it as much again since it takes for ever to time it correctly etc. Only for noises and stuff.

Hey everyone,

Yes, it's time for another video sub.
Due to the good response I got back from the Moya Moya Summers episode I did a couple of months back, I've decided to do another one.

I was a bit surprised about how many people liked it, and was very pleased since, at the moment it's one of my favourite shows. It's always a lot easier to sub shows that make you laugh while you're doing it.

This episode they travel to Okayama prefecture, or more specifically, to Kurashiki and Kojima in Okayama prefecture. The city of Kurashiki is famous of it's olden styled buildings, and in particular its "kura" or storehouses.

Anyway, they talk a bit more about that stuff in the video, so just watch that.

BAKUFU
Is the government of a feudal military dictator. This dictator was called a Shogun and so, for some reason bakufu has been Englishised as Shogunate. The leaders of the Edo bakufu were the Tokugawa Clan, with the founder being the famous Tokugawa Ieyasu. This bakufu lasted 200 years, with 15 different rulers before ending in 1866, when Japan allowed foreigners into the country and began to modernise.

KINASHI NORITAKE
Is one half of the veteran comedy duo Tunnels, along with Ishibashi Takaaki. Their popularity exploded '80s and they became superstars in Japan. Although they keep a lower profile these days, hosting less shows etc, they still command a great deal of respect and popularity in the industry. By the way, you may recognise the partner, Ishibashi Takaaki from the show Utaban, which he hosted alongside SMAP's Nakai.

FOLK TOYS
They mentioned a couple of toys in the video. One was a tako kite. The idea is the same as any other kite, but traditionally it was designed to be shaped like a buddhist or some kabuki type guy.

A Taketombo was also shown in the video so I won't really explain, aside from that the name means "Bamboo (Take) Dragonfly (Tombo)".

I'M NOT A FAN, I'M A BEEEEP!
I'm not entirely sure what the old hanshin fan said, but my guess is "I'm a Torakichi!".
This is a nickname given to extremely passionate fans of the Hanshin Tigers baseball team.
Torakichi is a combination of the words "Tora" meaning tiger, and "kichigai" meaning crazy/ madman, so loosely, it's something like a Tigers Freak. Kichigai is a slightly offensive word, and so that's probably why it was beeped out. Even so, many Hanshin fans are happy to call themselves that. No one really knows why.

MURAKAMI FROM MORISANCHU
Summers were reminded of Murakami when they met the lady selling "H....ts". Morisanchu are a popular, all female comedy trio. Murakami is possibly the least noticeable of all, and not as many appearances on TV. 
Anyway, here she is.

ODAIBA
This is a place in Tokyo that promises to be interesting, but actually, is quite boring.
I know, I've been there and made the mistake. Well it does have a Toyota museum or something showcasing their technology, but it's really quite outdated. The only reason to go there is if you're going to Disney Land, which is presumably good (I've never been there). Well maybe it is worth a visit just to look around, but don't get your hopes up, basically.

Oh  but it has the Fuji TV station there so you can go there and by merchandise of some popular tv shows, if that interests you.

There's also a random miniature version of the Statue of Liberty there for some reason.

Odaiba is an artificial island originally built for military purposes but is now a residential and commercial area featuring stuff like I mentioned. The easiest way to access it is by car via the Rainbow Bridge, or by rail on the Yurikamome, which travels on the underside of the bridge.

This guy is a legendary rock musician. He started out in the band, Carol, and later had a very successful solo career. He is often parodied in GnT, including a few times in the "Don't Laugh" series by the producer Nakamura.

Hey there people,

I thought it was about time I did something for the Gackt fans and Hey! Hey! Hey! Music Champ fans again after a very long time. Don't worry, I haven't completely forgotten about you people.

So, I was wondering which G video to do, and I often get asked to do recent stuff, but quite frankly, that's all too boring to sit through, so I decided to kill two birds with one stone and do another old collaboration with Downtown.

Yes, there was a recent one of him appearing on Downtown DX and even Heyx3 before the show ended but.....I dunno, I find the older videos funnier. There were also many other people that talk in between that weren't funny for those videos so yeah, the thought of just having to listen to them again after watching it the first time killed those options. For now at least. Maybe once I more or less forget what they talked about. Except by then, they'd probably be old videos.......fuck

Anyway, maybe I'll try and force myself through a recent one, or maybe not even watch it first and go straight into subbing.

Video Subbing: Lincoln (2012.05.01) No SATNAV Rally

G'day folks!

I've fiiiiiinallly done another Lincoln episode.
I think it has been several months since the last one.
Too long, I know, but I didn't even realise that much time had passed.
I'm more busy than when I started subbing, and it's just so time consuming....especially if it's an episode that goes for 40+ minutes.

I was wondering which episode to do and remember reading that a lot of people on the GnT fan forum wanted subs for the No SATNAV Rally episode when it first aired. So here it is.

If people want to ask for specific Lincoln episodes, I'll totally consider them, as I'm planning on doing more of this series anyway of my own accord yet only have a handful of episodes that I am personally planning to do.

So yes, make some suggestions if you want. Just don't expect it all to be done though.

I'll be probably be doing a Suberanai Hanashi next, but it may be something else.

I dunno.

FEMALE GUESTS

 Nanao is a currently popular talent/personality, mainly famous for her long slim legs (I think?). She was rumoured to be dating J-Pop/rock star, T.M. Revolution last year. I don't know if they actually are though.

Serina was a former member of the idol group SDN48. She was in the "centre position", basically the most popular and gets the most air time in videos etc. She's noticeable for her highly squeeky anime-like voice, which, in my opinion, can get pretty annoying some times. But sometimes it's cute. How strange.....

Sorry about all the raunchy photos. I just find the so much more interesting...haha

Sonmi is a fashion model and daughter of a ultra rich man who owns a casino in Macau. That might have something to do with why she's a model....since she's not really that....good loo...well not model level looks. This photo is nice though.

KANTO and KANSAI 
Kanto is the name given roughly to the area around the east coast of the center of Japan. This includes Tokyo, Chiba and Kanagawa etc. (wikipedia)

Kansai (or Kinki) is west of Kanto, and includes places like Osaka, Kyoto and Hyogo prefectures. A lot of comedians tend to come from this area and there are some distinct cultural differences and a friendly  rivalry between Kanto and Kansai. (wikipedia)

Also, these were these areas inspired the first two maps on the Pokemon games. The rest of the games modelled their maps on other areas of Japan.


TOKYO's 23 WARDS
The city of Tokyo is broken up into 23 wards, basically 23 different areas. Like the boroughs of New York, they each have their own council and stuff. (wikipedia)


 
GINZA PEDESTRIAN PARADISE

Ginza is a popular upper class shopping district. On the weekends, between 12:00 noon to 5pm, the roads are closed to cars in the main shopping area. This allows pedestrians to walk around freely on the streets between shops without fear of being run over/waiting for traffic lights. Hence why it's a pedestrian paradise.


SKYTREE

Is the new broadcasting tower that finished being built last year in Tokyo. It is the tallest tower in the world, unless if it has been overtaken already (People are always trying to build bigger buildings and stuff....). It replaced the Tokyo Tower in its TV broadcasting duties, as it was no longer able to transmit digital signals well enough anymore. This was because too many high buildings were built around it lol.
  

Video Subbing [REQUEST]: Gaki no Tsukai (2006.02.12) Hamada "Unthinkable!" Trial, Part 1

Hey everyone!

How's life?
I've got another video sub for you! This time its a fairly overdue Gaki no Tsukai video. Actually, many series are much longer overdue....like Suberanai Hanashi and Lincoln. I promise to be doing episodes from those series next.

It's also the first request in a long while, although I had always intended to do this episode and the remaining two parts of the trilogy. You may probably know that Hamada Masatoshi from Downtown can be one evil bastard. He loves to hurt people, he loves watching people being in pain, and many legends exist about his outrageous and abusive behaviour towards his comedian peers. For this, he has even been given the knickname Super S Hamada, with "S" standing for "Sadistic".

Now it's time for his victims to be avenged, and for him to be judged and punished for his unthinkable acts of (super) sadism.

It's time to open court for.....the Hamada "Unthinkable!" Trial!......err part 1.

Video Subbing: Moya Moya Summers (2012.04.15)

Good evening all,

Thanks for your patience while I complete subbing videos and shiz.
This time I decided to sub a show I've never done before, and yet is currently one of my most favourite shows. It goes by the name of Moya Moya Summers, and is hosted by the comedy duo, Summers (Mimura Masakazu and Otake Kazuki) and TV announcer Oe Mariko.

You may be familiar with Summers from the show 'Lincoln'. Right now, they are one of the most popular comedians in Japan and are known for their casual and laid back approach to comedy. They tend not to jump into activities like a lot of their peers and actually often admit that they just can't be bothered.

This show very much portrays this signature style, as all they do is wander around various areas in Japan without much aim, apart form searching for random things that catch their attention. This might sound uneventful, but this show is pretty amazing in how many crazy local people, crazy shops, and just simply unusual activities they end up finding.

I don't know whether you'll like this since it's quite different to the types of Japanese shows that you guys are probably familiar with. Also, the episode I chose might not really be the funniest, but I thought you might find the information within it interesting too so......yeah, hope you like it!

Oh...and I thought I'd be more proper and sub some of the text that keeps popping up on the screen but......I got lazy and stopped a quarter of the way...

Maybe I should consider getting some people to time these things for me?

Video Subbing: Shabekuri 007 (2010.11.15) Nakamura Toru and Brown Eyed Girls

So here it is, another Shabekuri sub as promised.

This particular one features the actor, Nakamura Toru, who first became famous for his role as Nakama Toru (yeah, very similar name) in the high school delinquent movies, Bebop High School. This turned him into a teenage heart throb among females, and a sort of a role model for delinquent kids in real life (Well at least the character from the movie).  Nowadays he mainly plays hard boiled and quiet action heros, sort of like Clint Eastwood. Before watching this episode, it might help to read the post about Japanese delinquents which that I wrote a while back HERE


In the last 15 minutes or so of the episode, the K-Pop girl group, Brown Eyed Girls make an appearance. Apparently their fans weren't too pleased with the behaviour of the Shabekuri gang, as they thought they were rude and disrespectful. You'll see why they thought that....although really, it's just funny lol. I suppose it's because of the difference in Korean and Japanese television standard/ etiquette etc, but meh, who cares?

Video Subbing: Nasubi (Ep 1 & 2) from Susunu! Denpa Shounen

Hello again people,

I'm back with another video. It's only a 10 minute one so it was very quick to do.
It's a request that I received quite some time back which I found interesting, but got stuck in the line a bit, etc etc. Well, I felt like getting started on it so here it is.

It's from a show called "Susunu! Denpa Shounen" the follow-up show for "Susume! Depna Shounen". The only difference there is the "nu" and "me"  switching in the "Susume/nu" part. This was because the hiragana "nu" and "me" characters look similar.

The videos that I'll be subbing will be from the Prize Contest Life section of the show featuring Nasubi, a strange looking (Nasubi means eggplant) but loveable guy that gets locked in a room and told to try and live solely on the prizes that he win through contests on magazines. Oh yeah...and all of this while butt naked.

It was a very shocking and controversial thing to do even by the standards of Japanese TV back then (90's), but it cemented the show's place as an iconic part of Japanese television history. It's kind of like a sick psychological experiment, and apparently Nasubi went through some tough times with issues like isolation, boredom, frustration and so on, although these aren't shown on TV......

Well I'll let you find out the rest through this video and the rest that I will sub from now on...

.....The only problem is that this is the only one I have. There used to be some on a video streaming site (can't remember the name....) which I watch, but they have since been deleted. If anyone has the rest, please upload them for me and others!
