MASTERS (SHISHOU 師匠)
Before the 90's most Japanese comedians studied under a veteran comedian, who they refer to as "shishou" (Master). Downtown did not have a shishou, and this was considered unusual for that time, and so they experienced various troubles (as you heard in the video). Nowadays people don't follow shishous but enter some comedy training classes like the NSC (New Star Creation) Program at Yoshimoto Kogyo.
