Video Subbing: Ametalk (2011.08.11) Sakigake! Otokojuku Comedians

Heyyy

It has been a while-ish.

I've subbed another Ameta-lk! episode again after quite some time. Continuing with the tradition here on this blog, it's another episode focusing on a popular anime/manga series. This time around it's....SAKIGAKE! OTOKOJUKU!!

That manga name was meant to be said in a particular type of voice, which you will hear if you watch the video.

"Sakigake! Otokojuku" (literally Charge! Men's Private School) was a popular manga series published on the Weekly Jump Magazine in the later half of the 1980's. It was originally a sort of a satirical take on macho fighting manga such as "Fist of the North Star" and "Jojo's Bizarre Adventures" that were also popular at the time.

Basically it's about an ultra-nationalistic private school that takes in violent delinquents from around the country and beats into them how to be a strong Japanese manly man. Lots of extreme rules and traditions exist at this school, such as being forced to commit suicide if you each lunch early during class. Crazy, but still funny, because it's not real.

Anyway, you'll get to know the quirky sides of this manga a lot more if you watch.....

Sorry about the quality of the video... I couldn't find any better ones.
Also, it'll be up on dailymotion in a few days so don't moan about it please :)

Manga Recomendation: Galaxy Express 999

Greetings Earthlings!

I haven't done this in a while....been busy subbing video for a while (well still am but ....meh).
The manga that I'll be writing briefly about today is Galaxy Express 999 (Jap: 銀河鉄道 999. "Ginga Tetsudou 999"). It's a manga classic from the 1970~80's, by Matsumoto Leiji , a legendary artist known for creating many other classic manga such as Captain Herlock and Space Warship Yamato (aka Star Blazers). He also supervised the artwork for some Daft Punk music videos. I can't remember the name but it's the one with blue people playing instruments....lol (check the bottom of the post)

The Galaxy Express 999 is set in a technologically advanced future where space travel has been common place for a very long time, and many humans switch their flesh bodies for "immortal" mechanical bodies. These mechanical bodies last around 7000 years if maintained well but are expensive to create, so only the rich can attain them. The mechanical people now rule the world and there is a strong discrimination against the poor people with perishable natural bodies. Because of this, most poor people wish to also have a mechanical body, but being penniless, there's no way they can even if the save up the meager earnings they may able to get their hands on. So instead they save up for a ticket to ride the Galaxy Express 999 train, which according to legend, takes you to a planet where they give you robot bodies for free. The only problem is that no one has heard of anyone returning from the journey. Even so, many people hold dreams for strong bodies and an everlasting life and decide to gamble on this possibly perilous journey to the other side of the universe.

The main character, Tetsurou Hoshino is one such person. He is a poor boy who witnesses his mother being hunted down and killed by mechanical humans on their way to search for work to save up for tickets for the journey. Before she dies she tells him to continue pursuing their goal, and get his hands on an impenetrable metal body. Intent on getting revenge on the human hunting mechanic people, he (I can't remember how but it was sudden...) meets Maetel, a woman who is the spitting image of his mother. She offers to hand him a pass onto the Galaxy Express if he agrees to be her travel companion.........which is pretty convenient, and suspicious at the same time. He agrees, and after getting revenge they set of on the Space train and travel to many different planets, meeting many different people with many different perspectives to life. It seems that although many 'natural humans' dream of a mechanical body, those with mechanical bodies end up regretting disposing of their warm body and dreams for a cold and senseless metal body.

Soo~~ that's the end of the plot description from me....I don't want to disclose too much. As I said before, they travel to many strange planets with distinct features, for example,

-A planet where people's ears have become so good at hearing that it's against the law to make loud noises.
-A planet where it's customary to paint yourself in gold plating. (lol)
-A planet with an alcoholic tarzan type guy that forces his monkey friends to also drink alcohol.
-A planet wear poor people live inside bubbles inside mud.......
-A planet where a professor has made thousands of clones of himself

It's kind of like Gullivers Travel's or Alice in Wonderland how there are strange worlds, strange people and strange customs, where that 'strangeness' is considered normal. As you'd kind of expect from old manga, the story is very simple and often follows one pattern, but I found it wonderful how these surreal worlds are given life and little histories and characteristics. There are also quite a few funny moments. Well not laugh out loud crying but those little sniff types or short chuckles.

Well I suppose the best way for you to know what I'm talking about is for you to have a read of it, or watch the anime if you get the chance to. If you do get that chance, then I highly recommend that you do :)

MATSUMOTO LEIJI x DAFT PUNK
These are the Daft Punk music video's Matsumoto Leiji worked on.

Oh.....there was more than I expected....like 2~3 more. You can look it up yourself lol
It's basically the ones with blue people.

WHAT IF? ANIME CHARACTER'S GENDERS WERE REVERSED?

 , I've got a weird post today.

From my mass collection of random pictures, I've found some of anime characters if they were the opposite sex. Errm that's pretty much all I need to explain about it really. Male characters are drawn as females, females are drawn as males.

*I got these from a Japanese site and Japanese males on the internet tend to be pretty perverted so most if not all of them are males to females but anyway......

LUFFY D. MONKEY (ONE PIECE)

PORTGAS D. ACE (ONE PIECE)

RORONOA ZORO  (ONE PIECE)

BROLLY (DRAGON BALL Z)

EDWARD ELRICH (FULL METAL ALCHEMIST)

YUGI BOY (YU-GI-OH!)

I've got more, but thought I might leave them for another day.

Ice Cube says it best.

"Checketty check yo self before you wreck yourself,
because too many pictures are bad for you health"

Well not really but who cares......Time for one last picture

RIKUM (DRAGON BALL Z)

TOP 5 FAVOURITE MINOR CHARACTERS FROM MIYAZAKI HAYAO FILMS (Ghibli)

Hi there! Today's post is another weird Top 5 anime related ranking that I've come across. This time around it's the 5 most popular minor characters from films directed by Miyazaki Hayao, the genius behind most of the productions from Studio Ghibli. These results were gathered from a survey by Japanese people in their 20's, and are separated into the male and female opinions. I'll also compile some of the reasons that these voters have given for there decision.

Counting downwards
MALE RANKINGS

No.5, Yakul (Princess Mononoke)
9.4%
The lead male Ashitaka's trusty partner, Yakul came in 5th for the male ranking.
He/she was praised for his courage and intelligence, as well as being a dependable....deer?

No.4, Colonel Muska
10.1%
The bad guy from 'Laputa Castle in the Sky' made fourth place.
An unusually purely evil character for a Ghibli films, his line in the movie
"Watch! The people are like pieces of rubbish!" as he dumps an army from
the flying castle to make them drop to their death is a very famous and popular line among male fans.

No.3, Catbus, (My Neighbour Totoro)
16%
The Catbus was popular among males as they
wanted to sit on its comfy looking seats. Personally I think it looks scary....

No.2, Makurokurosuke
17.4%
Even males couldn't resist the charm of this cute little fur ball.
From it's fluffy appearance, to it's funny movements, Makurokurosuke made
it into the hearts of many Japanese males.......lol

No. 1. JiJi (Kiki's Delivery Service)
25.4%
First place went to Kiki's sidekick from 'Kiki's Delivery Service'. This black cat impressed the males, mostly with it's ability to speak the human language, which they thought was extremely cute, and a desirable trait in their own pets. A cute friend to have.

FEMALE RANKINGS

No.5, Calcifer (Howl's Moving Castle)
12.8%
Calcifer, the fire demon and energy source for Howl's moving castle was popular for
his cute voice. There were even opinions that he would be handy to have in the house hehe

Tied No.4, Yakul (Princess Mononoke)
13.6%
Yakul also made it into the female rankings, and was liked because of his loyalty
to his owner, and his subtle cuteness.

Tied No.4, Mrs. Osono (Kiki's Delivery Service)
13.6%

Mrs. Osono, the pregnant owner of the bakery where Kiki works made tied at fourth place.
Her easy going ways, and ability to cheer people up was highly regarded by fans.

No.3, Makurokurosuke (My Nighbour Totoro)
30.3%
The tiny fluff balls made it again in the female rankings. Again, people were attracted to their
cuteness, such as the way they move and look at you with big eyes. It's a popular opinion that
these things would be nice to have hang around your house.

No.2, Catbus (My Neighbour Totoro)
31.3%
The Catbus was a popular choice again as well. Comfy looking seats lured people again, as well
as how it's ugly in a cute way (or cute in an ugly way??). Not sure about that bit....
It's big smile was also a highly regarded feature in this character.

No.1, Jiji (Kiki's Delivery Service)
44.5%
The cool talking black cat got the top spot once again, with almost half of the votes.
People liked it's bratty but straight talking nature, and the cute way it walk around.

Many people revealed their desire to have a cat that they can talk to like this.

..........Weeeell that was the Top Five Rankings for Minor Characters from Miyazaki Hayao Films.  Personally I like Yakul the most out of these guys. I almost yelled out "NO!!" when he got shot in the backside by an arrow, because I thought that they were going to kill him off like that....Luckily he didn't die, and survived the tidal wave of deadly god slime. lol

Anyway that's all I have to say today バイバイ!!
